Chapter Twelve

IT WAS TWO DAYS LATER when Lucy and I decided to stop in at the Cup and Bean and check in with Mr. Winters. I wanted to see if he had heard anything new, and I wanted to see how it was going with Sadie. I was taking his silence as a good thing. Sadie was an easy dog to love, and I thought she would be great at keeping Mr. Winters company.

Lucy nudged me as we stepped up to the counter to order. Mr. Winters was sitting at his usual corner table, and he was peeking beneath it. His lips were moving, so I knew he had Sadie with him. I grinned at Lucy. “Looks like someone is very attached to someone else.”

“Looks like it.”

We placed our orders for vanilla iced coffees and went to sit with Mr. Winters. “Good morning, Mr. Winters. How are you?”

I swear I had never seen Mr. Winters happier. “I’m doing just fine. Just fine.”

“That smile confirms it,” I said.

Sadie padded over to our side of the table for ear rubs, and we did not disappoint her. “Good girl,” Lucy said.

“She loves pup cups, by the way,” Mr. Winters said. “Whoever thought those things up was a genius.”

Lucy Grinned. “I don’t doubt it for a minute. I bet she’s already had one.”

He nodded. “She has. She also likes dog biscuits and sleeping in the sun.”

I chuckled. “It sounds like the two of you have hit it off.”

“Indeed we have. Indeed we have.” He took a sip of his black coffee.

“Dogs go right to your heart, don’t they?” Lucy asked.

He nodded. “They sure do.”

“I’ve been thinking about it, Mr. Winters, and I think you should keep Sadie permanently. Sadie is an older dog, of course. I think she’s nine, but she has a lot of good years left, and she needs someone who will treat her right and give her all the attention her little heart desires.”

Mr. Winters grinned. “Do you think so? I should really keep her?”

I nodded. “I think Clyde would be happy to know that his friend was giving his beloved dog a good life. He couldn’t be happier about it, I’m sure.”

He nodded. “Well then, if neither of you two ladies can take her, then maybe I should.”

“My cat isn’t fond of dogs,” I said. “No use making them both miserable.”

“And my husband is allergic,” Lucy added. “You are the perfect new owner for Sadie.”

“All right then, I’ll keep her.” The grin on his face made me happy to see.

I nodded. “Good. I’m glad we’ve got that settled. We won’t have to worry about her.”

“Say, I heard your husband was back on the police force,” Mr. Winters said. “That was a surprise.”

The surprise was that he already knew about it. “Yes, he is. He’s decided that he enjoys police work, and with the new chief of police, I think he’ll be happy.”

He nodded. “That Sam Bailey would have been miserable to work for. Good for him for quitting him when he did and good for him for going back to doing what he likes.
